Travelling with children

Consent documents, seats, fares and practical advice for a long journey.

Documents

Children under 16 need a birth certificate as well as any identity document. If both parents are not travelling, documented consent from the absent parent is required. This is checked, and a child without it will not be allowed through.

Seats and fares

  • Children aged 4 to 11 pay half fare and must sit next to their accompanying adult — book seats together.
  • Under-4s travel free on a lap but must be added to the booking.
  • Child and booster seats are carried free if requested when booking.

Practical advice

  • Journeys are long and stops are few. Take more food, water and nappies than you think you need.
  • Minibuses have no toilet on board. Scheduled stops are roughly every four hours and are short.
  • Pack a change of clothes for each child in the cabin bag, not the hold.
